Dear Kaiser Families,

You can support your child’s learning at home using a variety of online programs and tools that our students currently use during a regular school day. All DPS resources are accessed with your student’s ID # and birth date (for example if the birthdate is March 16, 2012, it should be typed as 03162012). Teachers have shared unique student login information but if you need to get it please reach out to your student’s teacher by class dojo. We hope these sites are helpful.

For grades K-5, these are our recommendations: pick one activity a day per academic subject

Reading

  • 20 minutes per day on Lexia 5 (DPS on-line reading program)
  • 20 minutes per day on a different reading platform – Raz-Kids.com
  • 15 minutes (or more!) per day of reading a real book to self, siblings, or pets

Writing

  • 15 minutes per day – Encourage your student to practice their letters and first and last name, as well as write stories, letters, journal entries, and/or a play. These are all great ways to get their brains thinking about putting their thoughts down on paper.

Mathematics

  • 20 minutes per day on online platform – ABCya.com
  • 20 minutes per day practicing writing numbers 0-100, drawing shapes, solving addition and subtraction problems and working inside their Bridge Math Workbook.

Other Real-life Learning – The rest of the day!

  • Do a puzzle together, the harder the better
  • Play board games and card games together
  • Cook meals and measure ingredients together
  • Go for a walk in your neighborhood and draw, read, write, make observations, count, make predictions, etc.
  • Create a scavenger hunt, say tongue twisters, write riddles, make an obstacle course around your house, play Minute to Win It challenges, make slime — anything to get them thinking critically and moving their bodies!

 Online Resources:

  • Lexia 5-DPS K-5 online reading platform. Log in with ID # and Birthday.
  • Storyline Online – Listen to books read aloud by famous actors/actresses.
  • ABCYA– math and literacy activities and games
  • Starfall – math and literacy activities and games
  • Raz-Kids- literacy reading practice.

Dear Kaiser Families,

You can support your child’s learning at home using a variety of online programs and tools that our students currently use during a regular school day, or that are recommended by your student’s teacher. All DPS resources are accessed with your student’s ID # and birth date (for example if the birthdate is March 16, 2012, it should be typed as 03162012). Teachers have shared unique student login information but if you need to get it please reach out to your student’s teacher by class dojo. We hope these resources are helpful.

For First Graders these are our recommendations:

Reading

To support your student with reading, consider having them read 30 minutes per day, or if this is frustrational, having an adult read to the student is great too! Consider taking turns reading or reading to a pet to make it more fun and less frustrating. Practicing phonemic awareness (sounds in words), phonics (spelling patterns), and other reading skills will set your student up for success in reading.

  • Lexia Core 5 (Lexia gives students opportunities to practice phonics skills at their current level) DPS Login
  • Epic Class Code: jji9096 (Epic has online books for students to read or listen to)
  • Consider joining your local library to access books and participate in their summer reading activities.
  • Reading can take place anywhere, not just in a book! Consider reading signs, mail, and anywhere your student can find words.
  • Ask your first grader questions when you read to them, or when they read! Use the Family Reading Support document for ideas on how to help them learn to read without telling them the word, and questions you can ask about the text.
  • Ask students to clap out syllables in a word, tell you the beginning or ending sound in a word, or produce words that rhyme with a word you have provided.

Writing

To support your student with writing, consider having them practice letter formation, finger spaces between words, sight words, and writing complete sentences in response to a text or writing their own story. In first grade we support students with writing phonetically (writing a letter(s) for each sound they hear in a word).

  • Example Writing Prompts that you can print or read to your student
  • First Grade Sight Word List. First graders should be able to read and write these words accurately by the end of their first grade year.
  • Support your student with using their fingers to stretch out the sounds in a word, then write a letter(s) for each sound they hear
  • Creative ways to write with your student include: sidewalk chalk, painting, shaving cream, sand, playdoh, special writing tools (gel pens etc.)
  • DPS Literacy Practice These lessons were created to support at-home learning. They can be used now as extra practice at home!

Mathematics

To support your student with math, consider having them practice adding and subtracting within 20, and counting by 1s and 10s forwards and backwards from any number within 120. Below are some online games and math activities to explore!

Other Learning Opportunities:

  • Science, Social Studies, PE, Music, and Art Activities Looking for a fun learning activity that is not math or literacy? This page has all kinds of arts and science lessons that are easy to do at home.
  • Extra Math and Literacy Activities These lessons were created by DPS to support online learning, they can now be used as extra practice!
  • Summer Learning information
  • Do a puzzle together, play board games or card games together
  • Cook meals and measure ingredients together
  • Practice asking questions using the question words who, what, where, when, why, how, and answering questions using a complete sentence.

Happy Learning!
